"We know that obesity is an increasing epidemic in this country, and we know it’s killing people. The lives saved by obesity surgery is one measure of the mortality attributable to obesity."

Obesity is a rising epidemic, and surgery should be one of the last resort treatments. It is good to see progress has been made in this field and to save lives.

"The lowest surgical mortality is seen among surgeons who have performed more than 50 operations and preferably more than 100 operations."

It is very important to make sure of this and check with your hospital before undergoing surgery. Obesity surgery is risk.

Great article.

Thanks.

It was indeed a wonderful place. I was amused that in addition to her enthusiasm about the various unusual animals and birds, Janie was completely taken with the owners' dogs. She is very good with dogs -- gentle and quite unafraid. It was also nice that Pamela was so casually generous -- finding a sun hat for Nophie in the lost and found pile, and giving the girls those little embroidered purses for free, to hold the bracelets I'd bought for them.
It should be spectacular in a couple of weeks at the height of the fall foliage -- let's go again, and this time we'll take the kids in our car for part of the trip!

Gail, thank you so much. I never know if anyone actually reads the things I put up here!

Afterlife is an interesting question. My sense is that Judaism conceptualizes the descendants of Jacob almost as a single organic body - the concern is less with the fate of the individual after death, than with the continuance of Israel as a people in relation to God.

Thus, Judaism focuses on the historical redemption of the Jewish people; while Christianity emphasizes individual salvation in Heaven.

I'd be curious to know what you've thought about this.

All my best, I'll look forward to meeting you, too.

L'Shana Tova!

On Monday at 2:20, I, as a new patient, will be meeting you for the first time. But I am really thrilled to read your eloquent and immaculately condensed discussion of guilt and redemption. Recently I have been brooding, w. my friends, about the Jewish version, if any, of an afterlife.

IAC, I am looking forward to seeing you and wishing you L'Shana Tova.
